Happy children in Bluefields, Nicaragua
Happy children Bluefields Nicaragua

Education is another cornerstone of our work in Nicaragua. Peace and Hope Trust built a large school in Bluefields, Nicaragua in 1996. The school currently has an enrollment of 400 students of which 30% are attending on a scholarship basis through subsidization by Peace and Hope Trust. While half of the staff are paid through the income generated by tuition, most of the balance are subsidized by Peace and Hope Trust.

Along with mainstream education, we believe that it is important to equip our beneficiaries with practical skills so that they are marketable in the workforce and have useful skills for their own survival. Peace and Hope Trust owns and operates two vocational training facilities on the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua. These programs offer sewing and woodworking training to students from the age of 16 and older.

Peace and Hope Trust offers a college scholarship program for Nicaraguan students who have shown a deep compassion for their own people. Since 1999, we have hosted 8 students for undergraduate and graduate level education in the United Kingdom.

A Family in the remote village of Esperanz Nicaragua. They continued to be devastated by floods, and were especially hard hit from Hurricane Mitch
Family in the remote village of Esperanz, Nicaraga,

Hurricanes and flooding are a constant threat to our beneficiaries. After Hurricane Mitch, Peace and Hope Trust was the first organization to visit many of the villages on the Matagalpa River. While the direct hurricane damage was northwest, severe flooding and mudslides razed many villages to the east. In villages like Esperanza and Guadaloupe, a forty foot wall / wave of mud decimated their villages. Peace and Hope Trust had the capacity to travel up river to these isolated villages and provided desperately needed food, medicine, transportation and other items such as lanterns and mosquito nets. That spirit lives on today. Peace and Hope Trust owns and operates a fast 15 passenger boat. With that boat we have the capacity to deliver emergency supplies and provide emergency transport to and from over 25 villages.

La Barra Rio Grande, a small village on the Mosquito Coast of Nicaragua, where Hope and Peace Trust has been working for a number of years. Here they are starting a heath clinic.

Hope and Peace Trust, building a medical clinic in La Barra, Nicaragua
Adequate medical facilities are limited and lacking due to logistics, politics and location. The isolated nature of the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua is a strong contributing factor to their high incidence of disease and death. Existing government clinics have empty shelves and are under-staffed. In 2000 Peace and Hope Trust constructed a remote medical outpost in the village of La Barra Rio Grande. We staff the facility with a Nicaraguan nurse and serve up to 5 surrounding villages from that clinic.

We are always trying to push the envelope and reach out to populations that are increasingly isolated. These populations are strategic hot-spots for Malaria and Dengue Fever. One of our most firm commitments is to the prevention of Dengue and Malaria. Peace and Hope Trust has an annual program of distributing mosquito nets to villages that are at exceptional risk of Dengue and Malaria. The results are amazing and every year lives are saves by avoiding these diseases / infections.
